The 124 gr Federal Premium 9mm round puts up an 18.4" penetration depth (just under 5" more than the .380) and an expansion diameter of over .60" – or 20% more expansion than the .380. This all translates into more stopping power. That additional power comes with a few downsides.
When a normal 9mm round is chambered and fired, the bullet is held firmly in place by the chamber and enters the barrel in a controlled and safe way. Since the .380 is shorter than the 9mm, the bullet is not supported by the chamber properly, and there's a gap between the bullet and the chamber wall.
In fact, if you shoot a 9mm handgun and a .380 handgun that weigh the same, the .380 will experience 94% less recoil than the 9mm. Admittedly, that low recoil won't do you much good against someone on the other side of the parking lot.
Which Is More Powerful?.
When looking at power, the 9mm unanimously beats the .380 every time.
It's a heavier cartridge that produces significantly more.
Depending on load and bullet mass, the 9mm penetration is between 8 to 24.5 inches. Using load and bullet mass, the penetration of the 380 is between 6.5 and 17 inches. Using the same FBI analysis, anything over a 12-inch penetration is useful in stopping an aggressor.
When it comes to expansion, our 9mm came in with about .62 inches of expansion. The 380 ACP was close. We measured it and found .59 inches of total expansion. Of course, the more expansion the better when it comes to neutralizing a threat or "stopping power."

The answer is that it depends and it's complicated! So let's dig into it. 380 vs 9mm Ballistics 9mm is more powerful. The classic 9x19mm loading is a 115-grain projectile at around 1150 feet per second (give or take 50 fps) and around 340ish foot-pounds of energy.
Both the 9mm and 380 Auto (and others like the 357 SIG) use the same .355 diameter bullet. However, although the bullets are the same (9mm caliber that is), they are NOT totally interchangeable. They will both fit in the brass case yes, however, even though it fits, does not mean you should use it.

the differences and similarities between the 9mm Luger and .380 ACP.
A typical 9mm Luger load contains about 6 grains of powder used to propel a 115-grain bullet to 1,000 feet per second (fps) out of a 2.75-inch barrel. (Velocities increase along with barrel length.) This produces approximately 255 ft.-lbs. energy while generating 5.36 ft.-lbs. of recoil energy from a pistol weighing 1 pound. .380 ACP
Most .380 ammunition of the defensive variety kicks an 80- to 100-grain bullet out at the muzzle anywhere from 900 to 1,150 fps, generation around 162 to 294 ft-lbs. of energy at the muzzle. Conversely, the 9mm spits out a 115- and 147-grain bullet anywhere around 1,000 to 1,300 fps at the muzzle, with energy ranging from 294 to 495 at the muzzle.
The US military has been using the 5.56 mm round for nearly 60 years — here’s how it all got started – Before there was the 5.56 mm round, there was the heavier, more expensive 7.62 mm. Here’s why the US military made the change.

A typical load for a 9mm will have 6 grains of gun powder — double the load of the .380. The 9mm is a heavier bullet, so that does not.
9mm and .380 ACP cartridges — both popular choices for self-defense rounds — have the same diameter, but a 9mm round is longer. The .380 ACP round is.

9mm vs .380 ACP Cartridge design and Stopping power The 9mm and the .380 ACP have bullets of the same diameter which differ in weight, though: 115-147 grains for the 9mm vs. 85-95 grains for the .380. The cartridges are not interchangeable. The 9mm cartridge is longer and holds more powder propelling the bullet faster than the .380.
On average, a normal load for a .380 will have 3 grains of gun powder. The average .380 bullet is between 90-100 grains, and in a +/- 3-inch barrel, flies at around 850-900 feet per second. This provides about 150 ft-lbs of energy on impact with a target. A typical load for a 9mm will have 6 grains of gun powder — double the load of the .380.
In terms of bullet diameter, they are both classed as 9mm (.355 inches). The rim diameter of the 9mm is .392-inches, the .380 comes in at .374-inches. There are also differences in the neck and base diameter. While the .380 comes in at .373-inches in both, the 9mm has a neck diameter of .380-inches and a base diameter of .391-inches.

A 9mm Luger typically out-penetrates .380 Auto bullets, but not as much as you might think. That may be due to the fact that the 9mm's extra.

9mm bullet diameter is .356 inches, .380 is .355, and yes I had to look that up I don't claim to know everything. Even though they have a relatively same diameter, the .380 is a 90 grain bullet moving at 1,000fps Versus a 147 or 124+ P 9mm moving faster or around the same speed.
